Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH -- Seniors scored the first four goals of the game Saturday for Virginia Wesleyan College's women's soccer team en route to a 7-0 victory over Guilford College's Quakers on Foster Field at the Trinder Center.
Playing before a large Homecoming and Parent Weekend crowd, the No. 6/9 Marlins scored five goals in the second half to break open the Old Dominion Athletic Conference game.
Christina Ferdnandes (Tinton Falls, N.J./Tinton Falls) scored a season-high two goals to lead the Marlins (12-0-1, 7-0-1), and Bre Ingargiola (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and All-American Jess Edelman (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) added a goal each to start the VWC scoring. The goals extended goal-scoring streaks to three straight games for Ingargiola and Edelman.
Edelman also produced a pair of assists, increasing her season total to 10, marking her second straight season with double-digit assists. She set VWC's single-season record last year with 14. Edelman's career total is now 33, just six shy of a new program record.
Ingargiola started VWC's scoring on Saturday with an unassisted goal in the 14th minute. Edelman added a goal in the 22nd minute, lifting the ball high into the right corner off a cross from Ingargiola. That gave VWC a 2-0 lead that carried into halftime.
After the break the Marlins began adding to their totals six minutes into competition when Fernandes scored her first goal, knocking the ball into the left corner. Seven minutes later, in the 59th minute, Fernandes hit again, time on the run from about 10 yards out. Edelman assisted on both goals.
Junior Marta Deptula (Haskell, N.J./Paramus Catholic) scored VWC's fifth goal in the 62nd minute. Junior Cat Whited (Fredericksburg/Stafford) and sophomore Sara Nickle (Pennsville, N.J./Memorial) added goals in the 83rd and 88th minute. Whited scored off an assist from Nickle, who scored her own goal on the run with a boomer from about 20 yards out on the right.
Virginia Wesleyan compiled a 27-6 advantage in shots, including 12-1 in the first half, while Guilford (3-11, 2-5) held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Erica Keil (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) started in goal for the Marlins and had two saves. Cat Brown (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) entered in goal for 15 minutes and had one save, and Mackenzie McGurgan (Conway, Pa./Freedom Area) played the final 14:36.
Coir Karoly (West River, Md./Southern) recorded three saves for Guilford.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Monday, Oct. 8, hosting regionally ranked Salisbury University in a non-conference game beginning at 7 p.m.
