Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH -- AfterTaylor Lober scored for Virginia Wesleyan College in the second half of Friday's field hockey game against Roanoke College, the Marlins played with an aggressiveness that kept the visiting Maroons on their heels at the U.S. National Training Center.
But, it was a goal and an intensity that was a little too late. Lober (Wilmington, Del./Concord) scored in the 64th minute and Roanoke kept the Marlins out of the cage the rest of the way to claim a 5-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win.
Roanoke (3-8, 2-3) rode the hat trick scoring of rookie Marceline Piek (Amsterdam, Netherlands/Ignatius Gymnasium) to the win. She tallied in the 11th minute to help the Maroons to a 3-0 first half lead and hit back-to-back goals in a span of two minutes to help Roanoke open up a 4-0 lead.
Devon Huddleston scored in the ninth minute to open scoring for the team from Salem and Kelly Finn scored in the 25th minute to make it a 3-0 halftime score.
Roanoke finished with a 17-11 advantage in shots, while VWC (3-8, 1-3) owned the edge in corners, 7-5.
Lindsay Baker (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) opened in goal for Virginia Wesleyan and recorded four two saves. Junior Kirsten Olson (Springfield/Lorton South County) played the last 43 minutes and recorded four saves. Darian Shuker (Reading, Pa./Exter Township) protected the goal for 51 minutes for Roanoke and finished with one save. Candice Fisher (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest) also contributed with a save.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 1 p.m. in Ashland against the host Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College.
