Bishop posts a hat trick as No. 6/9 Virginia Wesleyan rolls past Sweet Briar

SWEET BRIAR, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan College soccer had its second hat trick in six days recorded Wednesday as the No. 6/9 ranked Marlin women posted a 9-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory at Sweet Briar College.

While Brian Cornell (Front Royal/Warren County) scored three goals in the men's game against Emory & Henry College, it was sophomore Caitlyn Bishop (Virginia Beach/Princess Anne) who came through with the trio for the women.

Bishop scored all three in a row, hitting the first in the 26th minute, the second in the 28th minute, and the third in the 41st minute.

Six Marlins scored goals overall, including senior All-AmericanJessica Edelman (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional), who tallied two.  Allison Jaimes (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Shingle Springs Ponderosa), Breanne Ingargiola (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point), Emily Sheridan (Glassboro, N.J./Glassboro), and Christina Fernandes (Tinton Falls, N.J./Tinton Falls) all scored a goal each.  Ingargiola added a pair of assists and Nicole Martinez (Fredericksburg/Chancellor) and Fernandes added an assist each.

Virginia Wesleyan out-shot the host Vixens 30-1, but that one shot founds its way into the net.  Marissa McCord (Asheville, N.C./T.C. Roberson) scored in the third minute, off a corner kick by Ali Lifka (Arden, N.C./T.C. Roberson), to tie the game at 1-1.  THe Marlins came back with eight unanswered scores.

JuniorErica Keil (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) protected the goal for VWC and Katherine Tillson (Mechanicsville/Atlee) was in front of the net for Sweet Briar.  She finished with 10 saves.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Saturday, Oct. 6, in Homecoming action on Foster Field at the Trinder Center.  The Marlins will host Guilford College's Quakers starting at 11 a.m.
