Washington and Lee holds on for 2-1 win over Marlins

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. -- After scoring one goal off just four shots in the first half, the Virginia Wesleyan College field hockey team stepped it up offensively in the second half.

The Marlins out-shot the host Generals of Washington and Lee University 10-3 in the half, but could not get the ball into the cage. When the final horn sounded Washington and Lee owned a 2-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory.

It marked the third consecutive 2-1 loss for the Marlins, who dropped to 3-11 overall and to 1-6 in ODAC play.  Washington and Lee improved to 6-9 overall and to 4-3 in the league.

The Generals got on the scoreboard just 1:25 into the competition when Lauren Boone (Louisville, Ky./Collegiae) scored with a shot into the left side, set up by a pass from Claire Townsley (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS).  Washington and Lee struck again less than two minutes later when Charlotte McDonald (Bluemont/Foxcroft) scored near the right post.

Virginia Wesleyan came back quickly however, scoring in the eighth minute on a shot into the right corner by Courtney Pollard (Lebanon, N.H./Lebanon), whose score was set up a pass from Taylor Lober (Wilmington, Del./Concord).

But, that's where the scoring ended for both teams for the remainder of the game.

Virginia Wesleyan finished with a 14-11 edge in shots and an 8-5 advantage in penalty corners.

Lindsay Baker (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) started in goal for the Marlins before giving way to Kristen Olson (Springfield/Lorton South County).  Olson finished with six saves.  Kirsten Kyne (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) finished with nine saves for the Generals.

Virginia Wesleyan closes its season on Tuesday, Oct. 23, hosting league-leading Lynchburg College at 6:30 p.m. at the National Training Center.
