No. 5 Virginia Wesleyan remains unbeaten with road win at Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- No. 5 ranked Virginia Wesleyan College scored the first three goals of Saturday's women's soccer game at Bridgewater College en route to posting its ninth consecutive victory.

The Marlins improved to 14-0-1 overall and to 9-0-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with the 3-2 win over the host Eagles, who fell to 9-5-1 overall and 6-3-1 in the league.

Virginia Wesleyan, which has outscored foes 51-4 in the nine-game winning streak, scored early against the Eagles when senior Breanne Ingargiola (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) scored unassisted in the sixth minute.

Twelve minutes later the Marlins were up 2-0 after senior All-American Jessica Edelman (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) nailed a shot from 12 yards out.  Rookie Kerry Knauss (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson) assisted on the score.

The Marlins rode the 2-0 through the next 26 minutes and into halftime, but hit again early when play resumed.  Sophomore Kristen Mack (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) tallied just 1:10 into the second half, making it a 3-0 VWC lead.  Ingargiola assisted on the play.

Virginia Wesleyan was denied the shutout win when Amanda Peregory (Fredericksburg/Courtland) scored in the 69th minute.  The Eagles were able to find the back of the net again in the final minutes as Jacey Kelley (Newburg, Pa./Shippensburg) scored with 1:36 on the clock.

Virginia Wesleyan out-shot Bridgewater 11-3 in the second half en route to a 16-6 advantage in shots.  The Marlins also posted a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

Junior Erica Keil (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) protected the goal for Virginia Wesleyan and finished with three saves.  Krista Kelly (Greencastle, Pa./Antrim) started in goal for Bridgewater and finished with three saves.  Lindsay McDole (Roanoke/Catholic) recorded five saves in the final 34 minutes.

Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Tuesday, Oct. 16, in ODAC action at Randolph College beginning at 6 p.m.  It is the final regular season road game in conference competition prior to the start of the league's championship tournament.
