Box Score WINCHESTER, Va. -- Tara White is known more for her defensive leadership for the Virginia Wesleyan College field hockey team.
On Saturday, she made her presence felt offensively as well as she came through to knock in the winning goal in Virginia Wesleyan's thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over the host Shenandoah University's Hornets in Old Dominion Athletic Conference competition.
White (Alexandria, Va./Thomas A. Edison) (left) scored her first goal goal since the 2009 season when she hit the shot in the 85th minute, set up by an assist from junior Evan Bunting (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson).
The victory gave VWC its third win in four outings and improved the Marlins to 2-0 in the ODAC. It also snapped a two-game winning streak for SU in the series with VWC. Virginia Wesleyan leads that series 6-2.
Shenandoah (3-6, 0-1) scored first however, when Ashley Cross (Agawam, Mass./Agawam) knocked the ball into the cage in the 11th minute on an unassisted attempt.
The Hornets carried that lead throughout the half and into the second half, but could not
make it stand up. Rookie Skyler Weaver (Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) (right) scored her first intercollegiate goal on an unassisted shot in the 53rd minute to tie the contest for VWC.
Shenandoah finished with an 11-4 advantage in shots and had a slim 9-8 edge in penalty corners. VWC produced four corners in OT, while Shenandoah managed just one.
Sophomore goalie Kirsten Olson (Springfield, Va./Lorton South County) came through with six saves for the Marlins. Sarah Clare (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) recorded one save for the Hornets.
Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Saturday, Oct. 1, hosting the Bobcats of Frostburg State University at 2 p.m. at the U.S. National Training Center.
