Box Score

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Good news for Virginia Wesleyan College field hockey fans on Wednesday was the fact that the Marlins held 17th-ranked Christopher Newport University to a single goal in the first half at Captains Field.

But, not-so-good news followed in the second half.  The Captains stepped up their game and took 21 shots at goal, scoring four more times to post a 5-0 non-conference win.

Sophomore goalie Kirsten Olson (Springfield, Va./Lorton South County) turned in a strong effort for the Marlins (2-4), recording 13 saves, including 11 in the second half.  CNU out-shot the Marlins 32-3 overall.

Shelby Judkins (Hampton, Va./Bethel), Caitlin Cahill (Virginia Beach/Bayside), Chrissy Kurecki (Richmond, Va./L.C. Bird), Marlene Lichty (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch), and Kelsey Clark (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee) scored a goal each for CNU.

VWC competes again on Saturday, Oct. 1, hosting Frostburg State University at 2 p.m. at the U.S. National Training Center.
