WINCHESTER, Va. -- Bre Ingargiola and Christina Fernandes both knocked in their third goals of the season Monday to lead Virginia Wesleyan College's 15th-ranked women's soccer Marlins to a 2-0 non-conference victory over the host Hornets of Shenandoah University.

The schools become Old Dominion Athletic Conference rivals in 2012 when SU begins competition in the league, but Monday's meeting was the first for  the Hornets and Marlins since 2000.  The VWC win snapped the Hornets' current-three game winning streak and improved Virginia Wesleyan's record to 6-2 lead in the series.  Marlin teams have won five in a row against the Hornets.

While Ingargiola (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and Fernandes (Tinton Falls, N.J./Tinton Falls) scored the goals, junior Jessica Edelman (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) continued her torrid scoring pace.  She was credited with an assist on each goal, extending her current streak to eight consecutive games with either a goal or an assist.  She now leads the Marlins with six goals, six assists, and 18 points.

Virginia Wesleyan (8-0) scored a goal in each half, with Ingargiola putting the Marlins on the scoreboard in the 18th minute.  The Marlins were content to ride the lead through halftime and into the second half when they struck again.  This time it was Fernandes scoring in the 59th minute.

VWC finished an a slim 8-7 edge in shots and a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Sophomore goalie Erica Keil (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) recorded four saves, helping the Marlins to their sixth shutout of the season.  Kat Terza (Manassas, Va./Salem) had three saves for SU.

Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Wednesday, Sept. 21, hosting Sweet Briar College's Vixens in an ODAC contest starting at 6 p.m. at the Trinder Center.
