Streaks continue for VWC in win at Eastern Mennonite

Box Score

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- A pair of streaks stayed intact for Virginia Wesleyan College's women's soccer team on Saturday as the 15th-ranked Marlins defeated the host Eastern Mennonite University Royals 2-0 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference competition.

The victory extended the undefeated Marlins' current winning streak to seven straight outings and gave VWC its ninth straight win in the series with EMU (0-7, 0-1).  The win also marked the seventh consecutive game for junior Jessica Edelman (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) to contribute to the scoring with either a goal or an assist.

Saturday she tallied her league-leading sixth goal of the season to give the Marlins (7-0, 1-0) the lead in the 11th minute of competition.  She scored off an assist from junior Bre Ingargiola (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point).

The Marlins rode the lead until the final minutes of the half when Allison Jaimes (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Shingle Springs Ponderosa) scored her first goal of the season.  She followed a shot deflected by the EMU goalie and knocked back into the net.

It was the only scoring of the game for the Marlins, who just missed the mark on several other scoring attempts in each half.  Virginia Wesleyan finished with a lop-sided 20-3 advantage in shots, including an 11-1 showing in the first half.  The Marlins also owned an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Sophomore Erica Keil (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) finished with two saves in 71+ minutes in goal for the Marlins.  Rachel Calkins (Pauma Valley, Calif./Temecula Great Oak) also played in goal for VWC.  EMU goalie Jenni Beck (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold) recorded egith saves.

Virginia Wesleyan plays again on Monday, Sept. 19, at Shenandoah University at 4 p.m.
