Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Jessica Edelman extended her early season scoring pace on Saturday with the only goal of the game in Virginia Wesleyan College's 1-0 victory over New Jersey's Kean University.
Edelman (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) came through for the Marlins in the 66th minutes of the first game in the Captains Classic hosted by Christopher Newport University, knocking the ball after she put the ball into play on a corner kick. She has scored at least one goal in every game this season for VWC, which improved to 4-0 ... its best start since 2005.
Virginia Wesleyan dominated play in both halves in a game that included alert defensive play by both sides. The Marlins outshot the Cougars 13-4, limiting Kean to just one shot in the second half. Carly Seidel (Winslow Township, N.J./Winslow Township), Shelby Pedersen (Ewing, N.J./Notre Dame), and Kristen Hager (Spotswood, N.J./Spotswood) came through with shots for Kean, while seven Marlins attempted at least one shot, led by sophomore Nicole Martinez (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) and rookie Kristen Mack (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) with three each.
Sophomore goalie Erica Keil (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) finished with two saves for the Marlins. Katilin King (Little Egg Harbor, N.J./Pinelands) recorded four saves for Kean.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to Captains Field for the second day of the tournament on Sunday, Sept. 11, taking on Western Connecticut State University at 1 p.m.
