Duncan, Gee shine in tennis opener for VWC women

SWEET BRIAR, Va. -- Two rookies accounted for all of the Virginia Wesleyan College victories in the 2011 season opener at Sweet Briar College.

The Marlins dropped a 6-3 Old Dominion Athletic Conference decision to the host Vixen, but recorded standout efforts from Katelynn Duncan (Lynchburg, Va./Holy Cross) and Cay Gee (Parkton, Md./Hereford).  The duo not only combined at No. 2 doubles to provide VWC with a thrilling 9-7 victory there, but also won individually in singles.

Gee, playing the No. 3 spot, outlasted junior Krista Maldonato (Ennis, Texas/Ennis) 6-7 (4), 6-10, 10-7 in the tie breaker and Duncan rolled by rookie Andra Brumfield (Altavista, Va./Altavista), 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 4 position.

"Cay and Katelynn played excellent matches," said VWC head coach Edward Kahn.  "I was very pleased with the team's effort overall."

Virginia Wesleyan (1-1) competes again on Friday, Mar. 4, against Emory & Henry College in Lexington, Va.
