Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Kristen Blalock continued to roll along for the Virginia Wesleyan College Marlins, hitting 21 points on Saturday, marking her third 20+ scoring effort in the last four games.
But, she was the only Marlin player to hit double-figure scoring as Virginia Wesleyan dropped a 68-55 Old Dominion Athletic Conference decision to the host Quakers of Guilford College in the Ragan-Brown Field House.
Blalock (Suffolk, Va./Portsmouth Christian), who has averaged 22.25 points in the last four games, hit 9-of-20 field goal attempts for the Marlins, who lost scoring pace withe Quakers (12-8, 8-7) in the second half.
Virginia Wesleyan (10-10, 8-7) led throughout most of the first half, before scoring by Brittany Atwater (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft) and Lauren LeFevers (Claremont, N.C./Bunker Hill) helped steer Guilford to a 37-29 halftime lead. A Blalock layup kept VWC within eight points early in the second half, but a 14-0 Guilford surge gave the host team the lead it needed to hold off the Marlins the rest of the way.
VWC came back with a 13-4 scoring run, as rookie Katie Tassa (Bristow, Va./Manassas Osbourn Park), junior Beth Ann Boyce (Colonial Heights, Va./Colonial Heights) and junior Shawnee Lewis (Alexandria, Va./Thomas A. Edison) helped pull the Marlins with a 57-46 score with 5:18 remaining to be played.
Guilford pushed back out to an 18-point bulge several minutes later, but sophomore Rachael Miller (Sterling, Va./Park View) and senior Kristina Jameson (Harrisonburg, Va./Broadway) came through with scoring that helped VWC pull back within 13 before the final buzzer.
