Defense shines as VWC women roll at Emory & Henry

EMORY, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's women's basketball team put the clamps on Emory & Henry College's offense in the second half Friday en route to posting a 64-34 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory on the Wasps' court.

VWC (10-9, 8-6) gave up 20 points in the first half, but limited the Wasps (3-14, 2-11) to just 14 points in the second half.  Virginia Wesleyan forced 20 turnovers to aid in the win.  The Marlins also recorded nine steals, led by junior Shawnee Lewis (Alexandria, Va./Thomas A. Edison) with four.

Junior Kristen Blalock (Suffolk, Va./Portsmouth Christian)recorded her 10th consecutive double-digit scoring game, knocking down 24 points, her second highest total of the season.  She connected on 9-of-13 field goal attempts and 5-of-5 free throws.  Blalock also led all rebounding with nine.

Junior Jocelyn Spencer (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) scored eight points for th Marlins, while sophomore Kerry Johnson (Richmond, Va./J.R. Tucker) and Lewis finished with seven each.

Jalan McPherson (Jonesville, Va /Lee) and Ashlyn Baird (Boone, N.C. /Watauga) led Emory & Henry with 10 points each. 

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Saturday, Feb. 5, playing at Guilford College at 4 p.m.
