12-0 start helps Marlins to decisive win over Randolph

VIRGINIA BEACH -- A 12-0 start set the tone of Tuesday's women's basketball game at the Jane P. Batten Student Center where Virginia Wesleyan College's Marlins rolled to an 87-43 victory over the WildCats of Randolph College.

It was the Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener for both teams in a game dominated by the host Marlins.  Twelve women played for VWC and 11 scored, led by senior Kristen Blalock (Suffolk, Va./Portsmouth Christian) with 16 points and senior Shawnee Lewis (Alexandria, Va./Thomas A. Edison) with 15. RookieSarah Seipp (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) came through with 14 points and senior Jocelyn Spencer (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) added 10 points.

VWC's harassing defense helped create the spread throughout the game as the Marlins helped force 30 turnovers, while committing only eight.  Seipp produced five steals for the second consecutive contest  and rookie Brittany Glasco (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) added four steals.

Virginia Wesleyan (2-0) hit seven triples overll, including four by Lewis, and out-rebounded the 'Cats 46-42, led by rookie Nancy Kelly (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney), Spencer, and Glasco with six boards each.  Senior Beth Ann Boyce (Colonial Heights, Va./Colonial Heights) led both teams with five assists.  The Marlins finished with 18 assists and 18 steals.

Randolph (1-2) had a strong night at the free throw lines, nailing 22-of-36 attempts.  Brianna Lowry (Herndon, Va./Herndon) led the way, hitting 7-of-10 attempts en route to a team-leading 13 points.  Bonnie Bishop (Fairfax, Va./Trinity Christian) hit 6-of-8 free throws.

Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Saturday, Nov. 26, motoring to Newport News to face the 3-0 Captains of Christopher Newport University at 3 p.m.
