Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Allison Jaimes put the ball into the back of the net in the first half Saturday and the goal held up to the final horn as Virginia Wesleyan College's women's soccer Marlins knocked off the host Guilford College Quakers.
Jaimes (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Shingle Springs Ponderosa) put a hard kidk through the hands of the Guilford goalie, capping a corner kick from Jessica Edelman (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) in the 27th minute of competition. The Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory was the sixth straight for VWC in the series with Guilford, which favors the Marlins 20-4-2.
Virginia Wesleyan (12-1, 5-1) held the upper hand there afterafter and finished with advantages in shots (7-2) and corner kicks (6-0). The Marlins just missed tacking on a closing goal when a shot by Christina Fernandes (Tinton Falls, N.J./Tinton Falls) hit the crossbar in the 80th minute.
Sophomore Erica Keil (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) protected the goal for the Marlins, and recorded one save as VWC posted its ninth shutout of the season. Amy Baker (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) played in goal for Guilford (8-5-2, 3-2-2) and recorded four saves.
Virginia Wesleyan plays again on Wednesday, Oct. 12, hosting Washington & Lee University in an ODAC game beginning at 3:30 p.m. on Foster Field.
