No. 20 Virginia Wesleyan runs to 8-1 win over Randolph

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Bre Ingargiola and Christina Fernandes sparked a consistent Virginia Wesleyan College offensive attack on Tuesday as the Marlins rolled to an 8-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over Randolph College's WildCats on Foster Field at the Trinder Center.

Ingargiola (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) ripped in a season-high three goals and added an assist to lead the Marlins' attack, which included two goals and a season-high three assists by Fernandes (Tinton Falls, N.J./Tinton Falls).

Virginia Wesleyan (11-1, 4-1), ranked No. 20 this week by D3soccer.com, hit the scoreboard in the fifth minute when Ingargiola scored on a rebound shot into the left side.  Two minutes later Fernandes scored in the middle, finishing a feed from Ingargiola.  Forty seconds later, Fernandes had her second goal, this one off an assist from Jessica Edelman (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional).

Virginia Wesleyan scored four goals in each half, with Jenna Riegel (Sinking Spring, Pa./West Lawn Wilson), Angel Horowitz (Bushkill, Pa./East Stroudsburg North), and Edelman all scoring one goal each.  Kristyn Anselmo (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) recorded an assist.

Randolph (3-7, 0-6) averted a shutout in the second half when Brittany Hammons (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) scored on the run from about 15 yards outs in the 48th minute.

Virginia Wesleyan out-shot Randolph 30-4 and held a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Gaolie Hunter Gibson (Newport News, Va./Denbigh Baptist) recorded 13 saves for the 'Cats.  Erica Keil (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic), Bethany Bayles (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park), andAlyssa Goodwin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) all recorded time protecting the goal for VWC.  Bayles recorded one save.

Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. in Greensboro, N.C. against the host Quakers of Guilford College.
