Second half goals help send Marlins into ODAC semifinals

Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Virginia Wesleyan College's women's soccer Marlins scored a pair of second half goals Saturday to help post a 3-1 victory over the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinal game.

Virginia Wesleyan advances to the semifinal round on Wednesday, Nov. 2.  The Marlins will host the Maroons of Roanoke College at a time to be announced.  Roanoke advanced to the semis with a 2-0 win over Guilford College.

Playing on a cold, rainy, very windy afternoon on Foster Field at the Trinder Center, the No. 2-seeded Marlins were put on the spot when R-MC tied the game on a corner kick in the 52nd minute.  The kick by Jen LaBarge (Gambrills, Md./South River) was picked up by the wind and fooled everyone on the field by arcing around the crowd in front of the net and landing inside the goal on the right side.

Virginia Wesleyan, ranked No. 16 nationally, shook it off however and came back shortly thereafter to score back-to-back goals to pull away. Bre Ingargiola (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) ended the tie in the 64th minute when she ripped the ball into the net on the run from about 10 yards out on the left.  Her score was set up by a long lead pass from sophomore Nicole Martinez (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) from near mid-field.

A little more than five minutes later the Marlins upped the lead to 3-1 when senior Katie Gradel (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) knocked the ball in from five yards out on the left, assisted by a pass from sophomore Danielle Stephens (Round Hill, Va./Purcellsville Loudoun Valley).

Virginia Wesleyan scored first in the game, when junior Jessica Edelman (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) put in her 11th goal of the season.  Ingargiola was credited with the assist on the score in the 33rd minute.

Virginia Wesleyan dominated action throughout, not allowing a Yellow Jacket shot in the first half.  The Marlins finished with a 27-3 advantage in shots and an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Sophomore goalie Erica Keil (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) recorded two saves, both in the second half.  Charlotte Horne (Fredericksburg, Va./James Monroe) posted five saves in nearly 48 minutes for the Jackets, before suffering an injury.  Cecilia Quinonez (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) finished in goal for R-MC and recorded two saves.
