Late score not enough for Marlins at Roanoke

Box Score

SALEM, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's field hockey Marlins found the back of the cage as time expired Saturday, but it wasn't enough to avert a setback.

Roanoke College's Maroons scored twice on their first three shots of the game and held on to post a 2-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory.

Junior Amelia Goebel (Virginia Beach/Mercersburg Academy, Pa.) (left) scored the lone goal for VWC, sending the ball past the goalie on a rebound shot into the left side.

It was just too little too late for the Marlins (7-7, 5-2), who out-shot the Maroons (6-10, 4-3) 9-3 in the second half and 13-6 for the game.  Virginia Wesleyan also posted a 10-3 advantage in penalty corners, including an 8-1 difference in the second half.

But, Roanoke took the early lead and rode it to the end.  Julienne Brown (Orange, Va./Foxcroft) scored just 5:27 into the game on a rebound shot in the right.  LIanna Hachborn (Portland, Maine/North Yarmouth) was credited with an assist.

The Maroons added what turned out to be the winning goal in the 21st minute when Hachborn scored unassisted into the right side of the cage.

SophomoreKirsten Olson (Springfield, Va./Lorton South County) finished with three saves for the Marlins.  Cristina Scichilone (South Yarmouth, Mass./Nauset Regional) recorded seven saves in 66 minutes for Roanoke and Katherine Muhvich (Towson, Md./Towson) had two saves in 3:50.

Virginia Wesleyan closes the regular season at home on Wednesday, Oct. 26, hosting the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College at 6:30 p.m. at the U.S. National Training Center.  It will also be Senior Night for the Marlins.
