No. 10/17 Marlins tripped in OT at Roanoke

SALEM, Va. -- Roanoke College's Maroons found a way to slip past Virginia Wesleyan College's Marlins for the second consecutive year in regular season women's soccer competition.

Kara Kapell (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) was in the right place at the right time Saturday, following the ball off a deflection to knock it back into the net for the game-winning goal for the Maroons.  She ended the game in overtime, in the 96th minute of play.

Roanoke, which tripped VWC last season 1-0 in regular-season play before losing to the Marlins 4-1 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament play, improved to 8-2-1 overall and to 4-1 in the league.  The loss was the first of the season for VWC in 11 games.  The Marlins are now 3-1 in the ODAC.

Virginia Wesleyan had it scoring chances in the game, out-shooting the Maroons 8-6 and posting a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Carolyn Sarabacher (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) produced three save for Roanoke.  Sophomore Erica Keil (Wayne, N.J./DePaul Catholic) had one for VWC.

The loss also snapped a 10-game scoring streak for VWC juniorJessica Edelman (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional).

Virginia Wesleyan will attempt to get back on track on Tuesday, Oct. 4, when the Marlins host the WildCats of Randolph College in ODAC competition.  Game time is 6 p.m. on Foster Field at the Trinder Center.
