Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. -- After battling through several games plagued
by spells of cold shooting, the Virginia Wesleyan College women's
basketball team found a zone of consistency.
The Marlins connected on 41.8% of their field goal attempts
Friday, including 33% from three-point range, en route to a 78-38
Old Dominion Athletic Conference win over the host WildCats of
Randolph College.
Junior Kristen Blalock (Suffolk, Va./Portsmouth
Christian) hit 6-of-9 field goals to lead the Marlins
(8-8, 6-5) with 17 points. Junior Jocelyn Spencer
(Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) nailed
5-of-8 shots and added 13 points and junior Shawnee
Lewis (Alexandria, Va./Thomas A. Edison) connected on
3-of-6 attempts and scored 10 points.
Randolph (0-14, 0-9) followed the lead of Courtney Bouchard
(Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) early and managed to stay close
through the opening minutes. But, an 18-0 run by Virginia
Wesleyan gave the Marlins a big lead for good. VWC led 41-19
at halftime.
Virginia Wesleyan helped itself on the backboards, outrebouding
the 'Cats 43-33. Rookie Katie Tassa (Bristow,
Va./Manassas Osbourn Park) led the Marlins with eight
boards, while Spencer followed with six. VWC finished with 22
assists, led by senior Kristina Jameson (Harrisonburg,
Va./Broadway), and produced 20 steals, led by Tassa
with five. Rookie Nikki Piper (Clarksville, Md./River
Hill) recorded a season-high three blocks.
Bouchard led Randolph scoring with 16 points, hitting 4-of-6
triples en route to the total.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Tuesday, Jan. 25,
hosting Washington & Lee University at 7 p.m. It is an
Extreme Food Drive game and anyone attending will be admitted free
with a donation of a can of food.
