Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- A snake-bitten season took another hit Wednesday when the Virginia Wesleyan College field hockey team dropped a heart-breaking 2-1 decision at Bridgewater College.
The host Eagles scored the game-winning goal with just 55 seconds remaining, with some help from the bouncing ball. A shot by Colleen Dickson (Virginia Beach/Salem) bounced off the post and as VWC goalie Kirsten Olson (Springfield, Va./Lorton South County) turned toward the ball it bounced off her padding and into the cage.
Bridgewater, which improved to 7-2 overall and to 2-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with the win, scored first in the contest when Brianna Jacques (Orange, Va./Orange) tallied in the 17th minute off an assist by Leah Cossentino (Marriottsville, Md./Glenelg).
Virginia Wesleyan (0-10, 0-3) came back later in the half to tie the score in the 34th minute when sophomore Allie Lanna (Midlothian, Va./Manchester) knocked the ball in, assisted by rookie Nikki Cuthbert (Morrisville, Pa./Fairless Hills Pennsbury).
Bridgewater finished with a 12-5 advantage in shots, as well as an 8-3 edge in penalty corners. Olson finished with five saves for the Marlins. Taylor Waddell (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) had one save for BC.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Saturday, Oct. 2, hosting No. 12-ranked Lynchburg College at 1 p.m. on campus at Marlins Field.
