Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. -- Evan Bunting's pair of goals in the second half helped Virginia Wesleyan College's field hockey team to play host Washington & Lee University to a 2-2 draw.
But, the host Generals added the two goals to four unanswered goals scored in the first half en route to a 6-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory Saturday.
A VWC team depleted by injuries played a strong second half, but could not extend its comeback efforts. The Marlins recorded five shots in the half and had four penalty corners, while host W&L had five corners. But, the Generals finished with 14 corners overall and 40 shots.
Bunting (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson) scored in the 53rd minute, off assists from rookie Taylor Lober (Wilmington, Del./Concord) and junior Valerie Nowlan (Virginia Beach/Salem). Bunting found the back of the cage again in the 70th minute, knocking the ball in off assists from Lober and sophomore Amelia Goebel (Virginia Beach/Mercersburg, Pa.).
Rookie Laura Thorn (Owings, Md./Prince Frederick Calvert) played the complete game in goal for the Marlins and recorded a career-high 20 saves. She is only the eight woman in VWC field hockey history to record 20 or more saves in a game. Her effort is also the third highest ever by a VWC rookie goalie.
Caroline Sutherland (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Harbor) finished with two saves for W&L. Annie Stevenson (Charlotte, N.C./Country Day) and Kelly Tran (Simsbury, Conn./Ethel Walker)scored two goals each for the Generals (3-2, 0-1).
Virginia Wesleyan (0-9, 0-2) competes again on Wednesday, Sept. 29, play at Bridgewater College at 4:30 p.m.
