Marlins unable to fire up the 'O' in loss at Bridgewater

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's women's basketball team led 2-0 on a layup by Kristen Blalock (Suffolk, Va./Portsmouth Christian) to start Wednesday's game at Bridgewater College, but it was the only lead for the Marlins in an 80-55 Old Dominion Athletic Conference loss.

For the third game in a row, the Marlins' offensive failed to warm up at any point of the game.  VWC hit only 21% from the field in the first half and finished at 29% overall.  Bridgewater hit 56% from the field in the first half, and led 44-24 at halftime, and rode the spread to the final buzzer.  The Eagles shot 51% overall.

Virginia Wesleyan (3-3, 1-1) put up nine more shots overall than Bridgewater (4-0, 3-0), including 10 more from three point range.  But, nothing would fall consistently for the Marlins who did fare well from the free throw lines.  VWC hit 15-of-20 attempts, led by senior Kristina Jameson (Harrisonburg, Va./Broadway) at 4-for-4.

Blalock led Virginia Wesleyan with 14 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.  Sophomore Rachael Miller (Sterling, Va./Park View) scored 10 points and had three steals.  Junior Jocelyn Spencer (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) led the Marlins on the boards with eight rebounds.

The game produced 50 turnovers, 25 by each team.

Jordan Burkholder (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) led Bridgewater with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Katelynn Hottinger (Linville, Va./Broadway) scored 13 points, Emileigh Lambert (Charlottesville, Va./Albermarle) added 12 and Jessica Mullen (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) scored 11.

Virginia Wesleyan will attempt to snap its losing skid on Saturday, Dec. 4, when the Marlins host Lynchburg College in an ODAC game starting at 4 p.m. at the Jane P. Batten Student Center.
