Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH -- Kirsten Olson faced her most challenging situation of the 2010 season and emerged with impressive results for the Virginia Wesleyan College field hockey Marlins on Saturday.
A rookie goalie from Springfield, Va. (Lorton South County) (left),Olson responded to protecting the goal against Lynchburg College's Hornets, the No. 12 ranked team in the nation, by recording 28 saves, the fourth highest total in VWC field hockey history. Lynchburg fired 50 shots in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest on Marlins Field, only to see Olson move into position to knocked more than half of them away.
Five goals did get in however, as Lynchburg scored three goals in the first half en route to the victory that improved the Hornets' overall record to 8-2. Lynchburg is now 3-0 in the ODAC. The Hornets recorded 31 shots in the first half, but Olson produced 17 saves.
Lynchburg scored in the 15th minute when Jenny Weir (Richmond, Va./James River) finished off a play with an assist from Lindsay Leonard (Yorktown, Va./Grafton). Leonard had the chance to score herself in the 18th minute on an unassisted goal. The Hornets tacked on a third goal in the 31st minute when Shelly Milks (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) tallied off a Weir assist.
The Hornets rode the 3-0 cushion into the 56th minute when Weir came through again from about five yards out, assisted by Amanda Wain (Fairfax, Va./Oakton). Lynchburg's final goal was scored in the 59th minute when Wain tallied from in front of the goal on a Leonard assist.
Lynchburg used Tiffany Frye (Williamsburg, Va./Burton), Jordan Seeley (Louisville, Ky./Collegiate) and Hannah Myers (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) in the goal.
Virginia Wesleyan plays again on Friday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. at Eastern Mennonite University in an ODAC contest.
