For the first time since April 7, 2019, the Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team (14-12, 5-6 ODAC) defeated Randolph-Macon, using a late offensive surge to secure a 7-4 victory. The victory marks a significant milestone for Virginia Wesleyan, as the program picks up its first win over Randolph-Macon in seven years.
On the mound, Jacob Lawrence gave the Marlins a solid start, working into the sixth inning while allowing three runs. Matthew Weber earned the win in relief, tossing two scoreless innings and limiting Randolph-Macon's momentum after the tying rally. Mason Sylvest and Will Payne combined to close out the final frames, with Payne shutting the door in the ninth despite a late run from the visitors.
Offensively, Meienschein led the way with two hits and two RBIs, while Bryant added a pair of hits and an RBI. Folmar, Valentin, and Jones each drove in runs as part of an 11-hit effort for the Marlins.
The Marlins broke a scoreless stalemate in the fifth inning, capitalizing on defensive miscues to plate three runs. After reaching on an error, Marcell Whitfield helped spark the rally before James Tassone and Darius Walston delivered back-to-back singles to put pressure on the Yellow Jackets. Bryce Folmar drove in the game's first run with a single to left, and Joshua Jones followed with a bases-loaded walk to bring home another. Gino Meienschein then reached on an error that allowed a third run to cross, giving VWU a 3-0 lead.
Randolph-Macon responded in the sixth inning, stringing together timely hits to even the score at 3-3, highlighted by a three-run double.
Virginia Wesleyan answered emphatically in the bottom of the seventh with a decisive four-run frame. Israel Dozier and Joshua Jones set the table with consecutive hits before Meienschein delivered the go-ahead blow, a two-run double to right center to give the Marlins a 5-3 lead. Nick Valentin followed with an RBI double of his own, and Nathan Bryant capped the inning with an RBI single to extend the lead to 7-3.
