The Virginia Wesleyan women's tennis team turned in a resilient performance, overcoming an early deficit to defeat Shenandoah University, 5-2.
The Marlins found themselves trailing after doubles play, as Shenandoah claimed two of the three matches to take a 2-1 lead. The duo of Tuva Flink and Jette Hafermann provided the lone win for Virginia Wesleyan, cruising to a decisive 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles. Despite strong efforts, the Marlins dropped tight contests at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, putting pressure on the singles lineup to respond.
Virginia Wesleyan answered emphatically. At the top of the lineup, Tuva Flink delivered a gritty comeback at No. 1 singles. After dropping the opening set 6-2, she regrouped and dominated the final two sets 6-4, 6-0 to even the overall match score. Zoe Vliegen followed with another hard-fought win at No. 2 singles, taking the first set 6-2 before bouncing back from a second-set setback to secure the match with a 6-3 third-set victory.
The Marlins continued to build momentum as Jette Hafermann controlled her match at No. 4 singles, earning a straight-set 6-4, 6-2 win. Lexi Hackbirth was equally impressive at No. 5 singles, dominating her opponent 6-1, 6-2 to give Virginia Wesleyan a firm grip on the match.
With the team victory hanging in the balance, Jette Dammeier sealed the win in dramatic fashion at No. 6 singles. After taking the first set 6-0, she dropped the second before battling through a tight super tiebreak to clinch the deciding point.
Although Mikisha Thomas fought hard at No. 3 singles, pushing her match to three sets, Shenandoah picked up its second point there.
