The Virginia Wesleyan women's tennis team delivered a strong performance on its home courts, defeating Sweet Briar by a 5-2 final. Before the start of the game the Virginia Wesleyan University women's tennis program honored Hayley Haydon for Senior Day.
The Marlins set the tone early by claiming two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. At No. 2 doubles, Lexi Hackbirth and Jette Dammeier controlled the match from start to finish in a 6-2 win. Haley Haydon and Zoe Vliegen followed with a dominant 6-0 victory at No. 3 doubles to secure the doubles point for Virginia Wesleyan. Sweet Briar picked up its lone doubles win at the top spot, edging Tuva Flink and Jette Hafermann, 7-5.
In singles play, the Marlins took control of the match, winning four of six flights to seal the overall victory. Zoe Vliegen was impressive at No. 2 singles, cruising to a straight-set 6-1, 6-1 win. Sarah Reich added another convincing result at No. 4, winning 6-2, 6-1.
Virginia Wesleyan continued its dominance in the lower half of the lineup. Lexi Hackbirth was nearly flawless in a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles, while Haley Haydon secured another point with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6.
Sweet Briar picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, but the Marlins' depth proved too much to overcome.
