Marlins Come Up Short Despite Doubles Effort

Virginia Wesleyan put together a strong showing in doubles play, but ultimately fell 6-1 to N.C. Wesleyan on Monday afternoon.

The Marlins found early momentum by taking two of the three doubles matches. At No. 2 doubles, Tuva Flink and Jette Hafermann teamed up for a solid 6-3 victory, controlling the pace throughout the match. The No. 3 pair of Zoe Vliegen and Lexi Hackbirth followed with an equally impressive 6-2 win, giving Virginia Wesleyan the edge in doubles play. N.C. Wesleyan claimed the No. 1 doubles match, however, and secured the doubles point despite the Marlins' strong effort.

In singles action, the Marlins battled across the lineup but were unable to turn momentum into match wins. Flink delivered one of the most competitive performances of the day at No. 1 singles, taking the opening set 7-5 before her opponent rallied to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-2. Vliegen also pushed her match to three sets at No. 2 singles, bouncing back with a 6-2 second-set win after dropping the first, but ultimately fell in the deciding set.

Mikisha Thomas fought hard at No. 3 singles, narrowly dropping a tightly contested first set before falling in straight sets. Hafermann earned a first-set win at No. 4 singles and forced a third set, but couldn't hold off the comeback. Hackbirth and Jette Dammeier rounded out the lineup at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively, each battling but coming up short in straight sets.
