Women's Tennis Drops Contest on the Road to No. 23 CNU

Virginia Wesleyan dropped a 6-1 decision on the road to No. 23 Christopher Newport University Captains on Saturday morning at the James River Country Club, with the Marlins battling throughout doubles and singles play.

Doubles action opened the match, where Virginia Wesleyan University Marlins looked to gain early momentum. At No. 1 doubles, Jette Dammeier and Mikisha Thomas put together a competitive showing but fell 6-4 to Lindsey Bergelin and Nathalie Lanne. Tuva Fink and Jette Hafermann faced a tough matchup at No. 2 doubles, dropping a 6-3 decision to Emma Carver and Eva Taylor. The closest contest of the doubles slate came at No. 3, where Zoe Vliegen and Lexi Hackbirth pushed their opponents to the brink before falling in a tight 7-6 (7-4) tiebreak to Erin Gross and Samantha Robertson, giving the Captains a 3-0 lead heading into singles play.

In singles, the Captains continued their strong form across the lineup. At the top spot, Fink faced Kylie Schaefer and fell 6-0, 6-1. Vliegen battled at No. 2 singles but was defeated 6-1, 6-2 by Kendal Chang. Hafermann competed at No. 3, dropping a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Robertson, while Hackbirth fell 6-0, 6-1 to Bergelin at No. 4. Dammeier rounded out the losses at No. 5, falling 6-0, 6-3 to Gross.

Virginia Wesleyan's lone point of the match came at No. 6 singles, where Sarah Reich delivered a strong performance. Reich controlled the match from the start, earning a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Scarlett Gamez to secure the Marlins' only win of the day.
