The Virginia Wesleyan Marlins men's lacrosse team (9-2, 3-1 ODAC) improved to 9-2 on the season with a commanding 22-3 victory over Averett (0-10, 0-4 ODAC) on Saturday afternoon, March 28, in Danville, Virginia. With the win, the Marlins move to 3-1 in ODAC play, continuing their strong stretch in conference competition. The victory also marks the best start to a season in program history for Virginia Wesleyan men's lacrosse.
Virginia Wesleyan was led offensively by
Thomas Lewis IV and
Ben Andrews, who each recorded four goals in the win.
Keagan Hall and
Zachary Dupill added two goals apiece, while
Carlton Benton Jr. and
Matthew Harris also contributed two goals each. The Marlins showcased impressive depth, with 13 different players finding the back of the net in the dominant performance.
The Marlins came out firing in the first quarter, erupting for nine goals to take complete control early.
Cooper Seidner opened the scoring, followed by a quick surge from Andrews, Dupill, and Hall. Lewis IV added a pair of goals late in the period, as Virginia Wesleyan built a commanding 9-0 lead after one.
Virginia Wesleyan continued to control the pace in the second quarter, adding four more goals. Dupill struck early in the frame, while Andrews and Lewis IV each found the net again. The Marlins carried a 13-1 advantage into halftime, with their defense holding Averett to just one goal.
The Marlins extended their lead in the third quarter with another strong showing, scoring five goals. Harris recorded two goals in the period, while Smith, Skelly, and Benton Jr. each added one to push the lead to 18-1 heading into the final quarter.
Virginia Wesleyan closed out the game in the fourth quarter with four more goals. Andrews capped off his four-goal performance, while Benton Jr. and Mathers also contributed. Averett added two late goals, but the Marlins remained in full control from start to finish.
Virginia Wesleyan will return to action on Wednesday, April 1 at 4:00 PM, hosting No. 3 University of Lynchburg at Birdsong Field in a key ODAC matchup.
