The Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team (6-1) improved to 6-1 on the season with a dominant 16-3 victory over Marywood (4-4) on Saturday afternoon, March 14, at home in Virginia Beach.
Virginia Wesleyan was led offensively by
Keagan Hall, who recorded four goals to pace the Marlins.
Ethan Smith,
Ryan Mathers, and
Ben Andrews each added two goals, while
Thomas Lewis IV,
Logan Czerwinski,
Noah McCarty,
Johnny Hollinshead,
Cooper Seidner, and
Zachary Dupill all contributed a goal in the balanced scoring effort.
The Marlins opened the scoring early in the first quarter when Hall found the back of the net with 11:11 remaining. Marywood answered with two goals to take a brief 2–1 lead late in the period. Virginia Wesleyan responded in the final seconds of the quarter, as Hall scored on a man-up opportunity off an assist from
Johnny Hollinshead to tie the game at 2–2 heading into the second.
Virginia Wesleyan took control in the second quarter. Hollinshead scored early in the period before Lewis IV added another man-up goal to give the Marlins a 4–2 halftime lead.
The Marlins exploded in the third quarter, scoring seven unanswered goals to break the game open. Smith started the run with an unassisted goal before Czerwinski, Dupill, McCarty, Andrews, and Smith again all scored during the stretch. Hall capped the quarter with a goal in the final second to push the lead to 11-2.
Virginia Wesleyan continued the momentum in the fourth quarter with five more goals. Andrews opened the scoring before Hall, Seidner, and Mathers added goals to seal the victory. Marlins maintained control throughout the final period to secure the 16-3 win.
