The Virginia Wesleyan Marlins men's lacrosse improved to 7-1 on the season with a 9-2 victory over McDaniel College men's lacrosse (5-4) on Wednesday afternoon, March 18, at home in Virginia Beach. The team continues its historic start, improving to 7-1 with a 9-2 win over McDaniel, marking the program's best start since 2003.
Virginia Wesleyan was led offensively by
Ben Andrews, who recorded three goals to pace the Marlins.
Keagan Hall and
Thomas Lewis IV each added two goals, while
Ethan Smith and
Zachary Dupill contributed one goal apiece in the win.
Anthony Blackburn facilitated the offense with multiple assists.
The Marlins and Green Terror traded goals early in the first quarter, with Virginia Wesleyan answering to keep pace as the game was tied 2-2 at the end of the opening period.
Virginia Wesleyan took control in the second quarter. Smith gave the Marlins their first lead of the game off an assist from Lewis IV, and Andrews added another goal, assisted by Blackburn, to extend the advantage to 4-2 heading into halftime.
The Marlins continued to build momentum in the third quarter, scoring two more goals to create separation. Lewis IV and Hall each found the back of the net, with Blackburn contributing assists during the stretch to help push the lead to 6-2.
Virginia Wesleyan carried that momentum into the fourth quarter, adding three more goals to seal the victory. Andrews completed his hat trick on a man-up opportunity, while Lewis IV and Hall each tallied their second goals of the contest. The Marlins controlled play throughout the final period to secure the 9-2 win.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Saturday, March 21, hosting Washington and Lee Generals men's lacrosse in an ODAC matchup. Faceoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM at Birdsong Field.
