The Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team (10-6) battled early but could not slow No. 11 Shenandoah University late as the Marlins fell 12-1 on Saturday afternoon in Virginia Beach.
On the mound,
Chase Depalma got the start and worked four innings, striking out two.
Mason Sylvest,
Will Payne,
Zach Miller, and
Jason Caccavaro combined to finish the game in relief for the Marlins.
Virginia Wesleyan threatened early in the first inning when
Marcell Whitfield singled and
Israel Dozier worked a walk to put two runners on. However, Shenandoah escaped the inning to keep the game scoreless.
The Hornets broke through in the second inning with a three-run frame and added two more runs in the third to build an early 5-0 lead.
The Marlins continued to battle and broke through in the sixth inning.
James Tassone started the rally with a single, and
Reynaldo Perez Mendez followed with a base hit to put two runners aboard. After
Bryce Folmar worked a walk to load the bases, Tassone scored on a double-play ball to get Wesleyan on the board and make it 7-1.
Virginia Wesleyan recorded seven hits in the contest. Tassone led the offense with two hits and a run scored, while
Marcell Whitfield,
Israel Dozier,
Nathan Bryant, Perez Mendez, and
Jaxon Powell each added hits.
