The Virginia Wesleyan University women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Chowan University on Friday afternoon.
The Hawks secured the doubles point by taking two of three matches. At No. 3 doubles, the Marlins earned their first win of the day as Jette Hafermann and Lexi Hackbirth delivered a strong 6-1 victory. Chowan responded with wins at No. 1 (6-3) and No. 2 (7-5) doubles to claim the early 1-0 advantage.
In singles play, Virginia Wesleyan picked up two impressive victories. Competing at No. 3 singles, Hafermann turned in a dominant straight-set performance, defeating her opponent 6-4, 6-3 to put the Marlins on the board. At No. 6 singles, Jette Dammeier battled through a three-set thriller. After taking the opening set 6-0 and dropping the second 0-6, Dammeier regrouped and secured the match in a 10-7 super tiebreak to earn Wesleyan's second point of the afternoon.
Chowan claimed the remaining singles matches in straight sets at the top four positions and held on at No. 5 singles to seal the 5-2 final.
