The Virginia Wesleyan University men's tennis team (5-3) earned a 5-2 victory over Chowan University, securing the match with a dominant showing in singles play after a tightly contested doubles point.
Chowan claimed two of the three doubles matches to take the early 1-0 lead. At No. 1 doubles, Marcel Ungerboeck and Tadeo Missan topped Jed Platts and Sebastien Muller, 6-3. Virginia Wesleyan responded at No. 2 doubles as Ayaan Choudhary and Josh Buckland battled through a tiebreak to earn a 7-6 (8-6) victory, but Chowan edged the Marlins at No. 3 doubles with a 7-5 decision to secure the doubles point.
The Marlins quickly shifted momentum in singles competition, winning five of the six matches in decisive fashion.
At No. 1 singles, Choudhary rebounded after dropping the opening set 6-4 to Ungerboeck. He answered with a 7-5 second-set win before closing out the match 6-4 in the third to even the team score. Jed Platts followed with a strong performance at No. 2 singles, defeating David De Simon in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.
Tudor Vlad was dominant at No. 3 singles, cruising past Terumasa Inoue 6-1, 6-0 to give Virginia Wesleyan its first lead of the afternoon. Sebastien Muller secured the clinching point in a hard-fought three-set battle at No. 4 singles, winning 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 after regrouping in the decisive third set.
Josh Buckland added to the Marlins' advantage with a commanding 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles. Chowan's lone singles win came at No. 5, where Tadeo Missan defeated Simon Oster in straight sets.
