Marlins Women’s Flag Football Takes First Step as a Program

The Virginia Wesleyan women's flag football team (0-2) faced a tough test against Lindsey Wilson and Winston-Salem State University, falling 111-0 in non-conference action and 39-6.

Game One:
Despite the lopsided final score, the Marlins moved the chains effectively at times, finishing with 12 first downs compared to Lindsey Wilson's six. Seven of those first downs came through the air and five via penalty, showing Virginia Wesleyan's ability to sustain drives even against a high-powered opponent.

Virginia Wesleyan totaled 90 passing yards on the evening. Kendall Abercrombie completed 9-of-40 passes for 75 yards, with a long completion of 16 yards. Elizabeth Kelly added a 15-yard completion on her lone passing attempt.

Abercrombie also led the Marlins in rushing attempts with 12 carries, while Kelly added one carry on the ground.

In the receiving corps, Antonia Mohren paced the Marlins with five receptions for 61 yards, including a long of 15 yards. Kelly hauled in three passes for 16 yards, while Charity Egbo recorded one catch for 12 yards. Haleigh Hall added one reception.

Defensively, Virginia Wesleyan was led by Brianna Caro-Barrios, who recorded five solo tackles, including two tackles for loss. Hall added four solo stops, while Kelly and Mohren each tallied three tackles. Mohren also broke up a pass.

Terrah Henrich and Egbo each finished with two tackles, and Abercrombie contributed one tackle. The Marlins also recorded a team tackle for loss.

Game Two:
The Virginia Wesleyan women's flag football team continued its inaugural season on Sunday, squaring off against Winston-Salem State in the Marlins' second game in program history. Virginia Wesleyan showed improvement and growth from its opening contest, ultimately falling 39–6.

After Winston-Salem State built a lead in the first quarter, the Marlins responded with their first scoring drive of the season in the second quarter. Kendall Abercrombie connected on a 42-yard touchdown pass, marking the first offensive touchdown in Virginia Wesleyan women's flag football history. The score capped a strong individual effort from Abercrombie, who accounted for all 86 yards of total offense for the Marlins.

Abercrombie finished the game with 64 passing yards on four completions and added a team-high 24 rushing yards on five carries, including a long run of 18 yards. Elizabeth Kelly added one rushing attempt as Virginia Wesleyan totaled 22 yards on the ground.

Defensively, the Marlins continued to battle against a high-powered Winston-Salem State offense. Virginia Wesleyan recorded two sacks for six yards and forced two interceptions, limiting Winston-Salem State to scoreless play in the third quarter. The Marlins finished with six first downs in the contest, matching their opponent's total from the opening game and continuing to establish a foundation on both sides of the ball.
