Four Marlins Hit Double-Digits in Convincing Win Over W&L

The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team (8-4, 3-0 ODAC) defeated conference opponent W&L 79-54 on the road.

Omari DeVeaux led the team in scoring with 19 points shooting 7-for-15 from the field, 1-for-4 from beyond the arc, and 4-for-6 from the free throw line, six rebounds, and one assist. TJ East registered 15 points shooting 5-for-7 from the field 3-for-4 from three-point territory, and 2-for-4 from the free throw line, 11 rebounds, and three assists.

Malcolm Velmar recorded 14 points shooting 4-for-10 from the field, 3-for-7 from beyond the arc, and 3-for-4 from the free throw line, four rebounds, one assists, and four steals, and teammate Austin Smith had 13 points shooting 4-for-6 from the floor, 3-for-5 from three-point territory, and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe, and had three rebounds.  

To start the game, Virginia Wesleyan jumped out to an 8-2 lead, but Washington & Lee responded with a7-4 run to cut the Marlins' lead to 12-9. VWU kept up the pressure and went on an 8-3 run to take a 20-12 lead at the 11:40 mark in the first half.

Over the next four minutes, the Marlins outscored the Generals 9-6 to bring the score to 29-18 with 7:26 left in the half. However, the Generals responded with a 9-3 run to cut the lead to 32-27 at the 5:04 mark. VWU countered with a 6-0 run to increase their lead to 38-27 with 3:08 in the half. Each team scored five points to close out the half, to give the Marlins a 43-32 lead heading into the break.

Coming out of halftime, Virginia Wesleyan made three straight threes to take a commanding 52-32 lead at the 17:37 mark. Washington & Lee responded with a 6-0 run to cut the Marlins' lead down to 52-38 with 14:29 left in the game. WLU kept chipping away at the deficit, going on a 7-2 run to bring the score to 54-45 midway through the second half.

The Marlins went on a scoring frenzy, going on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 61-45 with 8:46 left in the game. VWU continued its offensive dominance going on an 8-4 run to increase its lead to 69-49. The rest of the game, the Marlins outscored the Generals 10-5 to seal the 79-54 win.
