The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team (9-4, 4-0 ODAC) defeated conference opponent Lynchburg 70-59 at home on Wednesday, January 14th, 2025.
Omari Deveaux led the team with 25 points, shooting 7-for-24 from the field, 9-for-9 from the free throw line, three steals, and had eight rebounds.
Malcolm Velmar followed with 12 points, shooting 3-for-9 from the field, 4-for-4 from the free throw line, and grabbed four rebounds.
Amari Moorer also contributed 11 points to the Marlins victory, shooting 5-for-13 from the field, 1-for-2 from the line, and had nine rebounds.
The game started with both teams coming out firing. Lynchburg took the first lead with a 11-7 run in the first ten minutes. The following six minutes of play were dominated by Lynchburg who went on a 14-8run, to bring the score to 25-14 with four minutes left in the half. The Marlins responded with a 10-7 run in the last minutes of the first half to bring the score to 29-24 going into halftime.
The Marlins started the second half with a strong 10-5 run in the first four minutes, tying the game 34-34 at the 16:33 mark. The Marlins were able to hold onto that lead with a 11-9 run, before Lynchburg tied the score to 43-43 with 12:41 left in the half.
For the next nine minutes of play, both teams went back and fourth, keeping the game close and leaving the score at 54-55 with 3:14 left in the game. Virginia Wesleyan exploded in the last minutes of the game, going on a 18-5 run, bringing the game to an end with a final score of 70-59.
