The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (10-7, ODAC 4-4) were defeated by Bridgewater College (14-3, ODAC 7-1) in Bridgewater on January 23rd, 37-58.
Sydney Turner lead the team by scoring 11 points, 5-for-9 from the field, 1-for-1 from the free throw line, had three rebounds, and 2 steals.
Bre Robinson tallied eight points, 3-for-9 from the field, 2-for-4 from the free throw line, grabbed three rebounds and got four steals.
Keira Bagwell also tallied seven points, 3-for-14 from the field, had four rebounds, and one steal.
The Marlins started off the game with the first points from
Bre Robinson, assisted by
Brianna Long within the first 30 seconds of play. The Eagles offense kept up the pressure throughout the first half. In the last two minutes of the game, the Marlins fought back and earned a few points to bring the score to 8-16. In first seven minutes of the second quarter, the Marlins responded to the first half by outscoring the Eagles 9-8 with 3:57 left in the quarter. Bridgewater retaliated by going on a 8-4 run to bring the score to 21-32 going into halftime.
Half way through the third quarter, the Marlins found themselves down. However, the Marlins countered by going on a 9-4 run to bring the score to 31-46 going into the last quarter. The last quarter was a defensive battle, with neither team scoring more than three baskets with 4:12 left in the game. A foul heavy final four minutes led to frequent free throws, allowing Bridgewater to close out a 58–37 victory.
