The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team (9-5, 4-1 ODAC) was defeated at home by Roanoke College (11-4, 4-2 ODAC) on January 17th, 64-73.
Malcolm Velmar lead the Marlins in scoring 15 points, shooting 4-for-8 from the field, 5-for-6 from the free throw line, and grabbed four rebounds.
Khai Seargeant had 13 points, 3-for-8 and 4-for-4 from the three throw line. Omari Deveaux also added 12 points, shooting 4-for-13 from the field, 4-for-5 from the free throw line and had one rebound.
Both teams started the game strong and traded baskets in the first eight minutes. Roanoke put together a 19-10 run in the following seven minutes to bring the score to 23-31 with 4:57 left in the half. The Marlins responded quickly by going on a 13-7 run to close the gap to 36-37 to end the first half.
The Maroons came out firing in the second half by going on a 15-6 run in the first nine minutes to bring the score to 42-52 with 11:21 left. The Marlins responded by going on a 13-10 run cut the lead to 55-60 with five minutes left in the game. Unfortunately, Roanoke went on a 13-9 run in the last few minutes to seal the 64-73 victory.
