Hard-fought ODAC Matchup Against Hollins Ends in Overtime 69-63 Defeat

The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (8-5, 2-2 ODAC) lost to Hollins University (11-2, 3-1 ODAC) in Roanoke on Saturday, January 10th, by a score of 63-69 in overtime. 

Bre Robinson led the way with 20 points, shooting 9-for-15 from the field, 2-for-3 from the free throw line, two steals, and had 5 rebounds. Brianna Long also added 14 points to the board, shooting 4-for-12 from the field, 6-for-13 from the free throw line, one steal, and grabbed 10 rebounds. Keira Bagwell tallied up the score by adding eight points, shooting 2-for-4 from the field, and 3-for-4 from the free throw line. 

Hollins University got the upper hand and went for a 6-0 run to start the first quarter. Keira Bagwell added the Marlins' first two points of the night from the free throw line to bring the score to 6-2 at 7:30. The Green and Gold held the lead with a run of 15-8 in the last seven minutes of the first quarter, leading us into the second quarter with a score of 9-21. 

Coming into the second quarter, the Marlins started strong, going on a 15-3 run to even the score to 24-24 at 3:35. Hollins responded by going on a small 6-5 run in the final minutes of the second quarter, holding the lead by only 3 points with a score of 27-30 at the end of the first half. 

Coming out into the second half with a score of 27-30, Hollins came out strong, going on a 14-4 run in the first seven minutes to take a 31-44 lead with 3:12 left in the third quarter. In the final minutes of the third quarter, both teams traded baskets in a 7-7 run, sending the game into the fourth with the score at 38-48. 

In the final quarter, the Marlins came out strong, chipping away at the host's lead with a 21-11 run to tie the game at 59-59 in the final 24 seconds and force overtime. In the five-minute overtime period, Hollins pulled ahead with a 10-4 run to close out the game and secure a 69-63 victory.
