The Virginia Wesleyan University women's soccer team (7-2-1, 2-1 ODAC) turned in a dominant performance, shutting out Eastern Mennonite 3-0 at EMU Turf Field.
Six different Marlins scored a point in this game, with three different goal scorers and three different players with assists.
Riley Keefe got her first win of the season as she played just under 62 minutes and had one save in the game.
VWU's attack was relentless from the opening whistle, firing off 16 shots in the first half alone. Their pressure paid off in the 24th minute when
Alaina Alston broke through the Royals' defense, finishing off a pass from
Courtney Mills to give the Marlins a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
The second half saw more of the same as Virginia Wesleyan continued to control possession.
Shyenne Diaz doubled the advantage in the 54th minute, finding the back of the net after a setup from
Grace Engelbert. Less than 20 minutes later,
Alexis Miller sealed the victory with her second goal of the season, assisted by
Janessa Lowe, pushing the lead to 3-0.
Defensively, the Marlins were rock-solid, limiting Eastern Mennonite to just two total shots and one on goal all match. Keeper support was rarely needed, with VWU's backline shutting down opportunities before they could develop. The Marlins also owned the stat sheet, holding a commanding 29-2 edge in shots and an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks.
