The Virginia Wesleyan University women's soccer team (5-1-1) earned a 4-0 victory over St. Mary's (MD) (3-4-2) on Saturday afternoon at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium.
Allie Greco played the majority of the match, earning her fifth win of the season in goal for the Marlins, making a key save in the second half to help preserve the clean sheet. Sophia Valenzano and Riley Keefe also saw brief action in goal earlier in the game, combining to keep St. Mary's off the scoreboard.
The Marlins came out firing in the opening minutes, with Shyenne Diaz scoring just over a minute into the match. Kaylyn Seitz added another goal in the 9th minute, and Alexis Miller converted a penalty just before halftime to give VWU a commanding 3-0 lead. In the second half, Charlotte Gantt added the fourth goal in the 82nd minute to cap the scoring.
Virginia Wesleyan dominated in all facets of play, finishing with 28 total shots, including 11 on target, and recording 10 corner kicks. The defense was anchored by strong play in front of the goalkeeper, limiting St. Mary's to just three shots on goal and earning a clean sheet.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Wednesday, September 24, at 4:00 p.m., when they host Washington and Lee University at Foster Field at the Tassos Paphitis Soccer Complex in Virginia Beach, Va.
