The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team (2-4) put together a dominant performance in the 5-0 win against Wilson College.
DJ Holsclaw played the full 60 minutes in net to earn her second win of the season, allowed zero goals, and four saves in the win.
The first quarter was tightly contested as both teams worked to find an early rhythm. Virginia Wesleyan struck first late in the frame when
Jasmine Padilla capitalized on an opportunity and scored the opening goal at the 14:57 mark. The Marlins' defense stayed solid and did not allow Wilson a shot attempt in the first quarter, taking a 1-0 lead into the break.
The Marlins extended their advantage in the second quarter with two quick goals. At 22:24,
Kellyn McCloud scored off an assist from
Gabriella Ortiz to double the lead. A few minutes later,
Kyndra Peyton broke through with another goal at 28:02, giving Virginia Wesleyan a comfortable 3-0 lead heading into halftime. Despite Wilson outshooting the Marlins 5-4 in the period and earning six penalty corners, VWU's defense and goalkeeper held strong to keep the Phoenix off the board.
Virginia Wesleyan continued its pressure in the third quarter, converting again at 41:39. McCloud connected with
Ava Stauch, who finished for the fourth goal of the afternoon. The Marlins also generated six penalty corners in the quarter, keeping Wilson on its heels.
In the closing minutes of the fourth quarter, Virginia Wesleyan put the game completely out of reach. Peyton struck for her second goal of the match with just 23 seconds remaining, sealing the 5-0 shutout. Wilson was unable to register a shot in the final quarter as the Marlins closed out the game with tight defensive play.
The Marlins finished the match with a commanding 14-6 shot advantage and earned 10 penalty corners, leaving no doubt about their offensive dominance. Their relentless effort electrified Birdsong Field and set a powerful tone for the season.
