The Virginia Wesleyan University women's soccer team (2-0-0) earned a 4-0 victory over the United States Merchant Marine Academy (0-2) on Sunday morning at Foster Field at the Tassos Paphitis Soccer Complex.
The Marlins offense had balanced scoring with four different goal scorers. First Year
Zyon Ferguson scored her first collegiate goal. The other goal scorers were
Alaina Alston,
Alexis Manfredi, and
Autumn Horst.
Stephanie Koblish and
Kaylyn Seitz registered the only assists in the game as well.
The Marlins opened the scoring in the 38th minute when
Zyon Ferguson netted her first goal of the season. Six minutes later,
Alaina Alston added her first goal, assisted by
Stephanie Koblish, to give VWU a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. The scoring continued early in the second half, with
Alexis Manfredi scoring her second goal of the season in the 50th minute, assisted by
Kaylyn Seitz.
Autumn Horst capped the scoring in the 60th minute with her first goal of the season, securing the 4-0 final.
Virginia Wesleyan dominated offensively, out shooting Merchant Marine 25-4 and placing 12 shots on frame, while holding an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks. The Marlins' defense and goalkeeper duo kept a clean sheet, allowing no goals despite eight saves by the Mariners.
The Marlins return to action on Friday, September 5, at 7:00 p.m., when they host Mount St. Joseph University at Foster Field at the Tassos Paphitis Soccer Complex in Virginia Beach.
