Late Penalty Stroke Lifts Hood Past Virginia Wesleyan in Defensive Battle

The Virginia Wesleyan field hockey team (0-1) suffered a 1-0 loss to Hood College.

DJ Holsclaw and the defense played extremely well playing all 60 minutes, allowed one goal on a penalty stroke, and tallied seven saves.

The Marlins dominated possession and outshot the Blazers 20-11, but couldn't find the back of the cage, as a fourth-quarter penalty stroke proved decisive.

Both teams came out strong defensively in a scoreless first half. goalkeeper DJ Holsclaw anchored the Marlins' backline, making four saves in the opening quarter to keep Hood off the scoreboard. Virginia Wesleyan generated plenty of offense in the second quarter, outshooting the Blazers 8-3, but Hood's goalkeeper turned away multiple attempts to send the teams into halftime deadlocked at 0-0.

The Marlins carried that momentum into the third quarter, piling up five shots and five penalty corners while keeping Hood without a single attempt. However, the Blazers broke through early in the fourth quarter when Ellie Dainton converted a penalty stroke in the 51st minute to put Hood up 1-0.

Virginia Wesleyan continued to press for the equalizer, recording four more shots and earning another corner in the final minutes, but Hood's defense held strong to seal the 1-0 win.
