Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Men's Tennis Goes 1-1 with loss to No. 47 Averett and Win over Ferrum

The Virginia Wesleyan men's tennis team (7-9, 5-3 ODAC) split their squad on Saturday, April 12, falling to conference rival, No. 47 Averett University, 6-1 and sweeping Ferrum College 7-0.

Match vs Averett
The Cougars had a strong start to the match with a 6-1 win at #1 doubles over the Rullan Zarraga twins; but the Marlins leveled doubles competition with a 6-2 victory by Sebastien Muller and Hovo Madanyan at #2. To claim the doubles point for the Marlins, Tudor Vlad and Sainandan Challagundla overcame Florian Bert and Alex Donnelly by a score of 6-4 at #3. 

Averett grabbed two straight set singles wins at #3 over Francis Cabaddu and then at #1 over Tudor Vlad to take a 2-1 lead after losing the doubles point. 

At #2 singles, Rafael Rullan Zarraga won his first set over Jaeden Mukkaladyil 6-1, but his opponent fought back and won the next two sets 6-4, 6-0. 

Prabjeet Chandhok clinched the match for Averett at #4 singles over Sebastien Muller by a score of 6-3, 6-2. 

Next to finish was Hovo Madanyan, who lost to Rafael Jodas 6-4, 6-3 at the fifth spot. The last match to finish was #6 singles where Carlos Rullan Zarraga won the first set 6-4 at #6, but came up short 6-1, 11-9 against Lucas Fiandra. 

Match vs Ferrum
The Marlins seized the doubles point as Frieso ter Schiphorst won 6-3 at the top spot, and Josh Buckland and Natan Aerts won 6-1 at #2. VWU won the third doubles as well by forfeit. 

Frieso ter Schiphorst and Olaf Van der Stam dominated their opponents at #3 and #5 singles respectively. Josh Buckland also had a smooth victory at #4, winning 6-0, 6-1. 

Natan Aerts won in straight sets at the top of the lineup against Emilio Munguia by a score of 6-4, 7-5; and at the second line of singles Jan Puvill battled against Gabriel Alvarez, winning 6-2, 6-7 (6), 10-8. Alen Curovic won by forfeit at the sixth position to make it a clean sweep for the men's tennis team. 

On Sunday, April 13, at 12:00 p.m., the men's team will face ODAC opponent, Guilford College.
