The Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team (3-4, 0-2 ODAC) fell to Guilford College in a doubleheader series, losing 9-13 the first game and 6-7 the second game.
Game One:
Ty James led the Marlins, going 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Noah Burton went 3-for-4 and scored two runs.
The Marlins went scoreless in the first inning, and it was Guilford who scored first with one run at the bottom of the first.
At the top of the second, the Marlins left two runners on base but were unable to convert. Guilford scored their second run of the game at the bottom of the second to go up 2-0. The Quakers made quick work of VWU in the top of the third inning and extended their lead into the bottom of the third with three runs to lead 5-0.
Nick Valentin doubled to left center to begin the top of the fourth; and then Marcell Whitfield was hit by a pitch. Ty James grounded out to third base with a sacrifice bunt, sending Valentin to third and Whitfield to second. Josh Goodrich singled up the middle scoring both Valentin and Whitfield home to give the Marlins two runs. Noah Burton continued the Marlin success with a single to right field that moved Goodrich to second base. Lastly, Clay Clarke tripled to right center field, which scored both Burton and Goodrich, bringing the score to 5-4 with the Marlins just behind the Quakers. At the bottom of the fourth, VWU captured three consecutive outs to apply pressure to the Quakers.
John Bastiaans scored a home run to tie the game at 5-5 at the top of the fifth for the Marlins; and they kept Guilford from scoring in the bottom of the fifth.
The Quakers scored six runs at the bottom of the sixth to take a commanding 11-5 lead; but the Marlins fought back in the top of the seventh. Gino Meienschein doubled to right center and scored off a double from Ty James. Then, Ty James advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored off a sacrifice fly by Josh Goodrich. Noah Burton singled; Clay Clarke was hit by a pitch; and Edgar Harwood walked, loading the bases for the Marlins. John Bastiaans was then hit by a pitch, which advanced all of the runners, sending Noah Burton home. Nick Valentin singled through the left side, which scored Clay Clarke. With four runs in the top of the seventh, the Marlins found themselves right behind Guilford at 11-9.
Guilford responded with two more runs at the bottom of the seventh to lead 13-9. Ty James singled at the top of the eighth, but neither team was able to score a run for the remainder of the game, which awarded Guilford the 13-9 win.
Game Two:
Clay Clarke and Nick Valentin led the Marlins as they both went 2-for-4 at bat for the Marlins and each scored a run.
The Marlins had a slow start to the second game as they were unable to score in the first four innings, falling behind 4-0 to Guilford.
At the top of the fifth, Clay Clarke walked; and Edgar Harwood singled up the middle, which advanced Clarke to second. The Marlins took advantage of errors by the Quakers as John Bastiaans reached first, and Harwood and Clarke scored, bringing the score to 4-2. John Bastiaans managed to score on a wild pitch, which put VWU within a point at 4-3. Guilford stretched their lead to 6-3 with two runs at the bottom of the fifth.
Noah Burton was hit by a pitch at the top of the sixth; and then Clay Clarke singled to left field. Burton advanced all the way to home plate off errors by the Quaker outfield, bringing the score to 6-4; and the Marlins prevented Guilford from scoring in the bottom of the sixth.
John Bastiaans reached first base on a fielding error to begin the seventh inning. Nick Valentin also reached first in the same manner, which moved Bastiaans to second; Bastiaans moved yet another based off a wild pitch to apply pressure to the Quakers. Gino Meienschein was up next, grounding out, but Bastiaans was able to score; and Valentin advanced to third. John Stilwell singled to left center, scoring Valentin and tying the game at 6-6. Guilford did not score in the bottom of the seventh.
The eighth inning was scoreless for both teams. At the top of the ninth, the Marlins were unable to score. The Quakers scored a run at the bottom of the ninth to seal the 7-6 win after a close battle.
Next, the Marlins will face Southern Virginia University on Tuesday, March 11, at 2 p.m. in an away contest.
