The Virginia Wesleyan women's tennis team (3-4, 1-2 ODAC) faced Sweet Briar College to wrap up spring break and fell 5-2.
In doubles play,
Lina Hackner and
Meena Lennon sped to a 6-2 win at #2 over Lucia Bovard and Juli Caracciolo. Sweet Briar responded with a 6-2 victory at the top spot over
Tuva Flink and
Jette Hafermann, forcing the third court to decide the doubles point.
Mikisha Thomas and
Zoe Vliegen led their opponents 5-3 but were pushed to a tiebreaker, which they won 7-5, to put VWU ahead 1-0 approaching singles play.
At #1 singles,
Tuva Flink lost the first set to Ana Patino 6-0, but found her game in the second set, in which she was barely edged 6-4.
Meena Lennon battled hard at #3 but came up short 7-5, 6-2.
Zoe Vliegen held the lead in both the first and second set against her opponent at #2, but struggled to close, falling 7-6 (6), 7-5. Victories by the Vixens at #s 1-3 singles put the Vixens ahead 3-1, leaving #s 4-6 to decide the match.
Both
Lina Hackner at #4 and
Sarah Reich at #6 lost their first sets by scores of 6-1 and each fought back to win the second set to force a third.
Jette Hafermann won her first set in a tiebreaker but fell in the second, which also sent her to a third. Clinching the match at #4 singles for Sweet Briar was Isadora Lima over Hackner with a 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (3) victory. Hafermann battled from 3-0 down in the final set and won her match 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-4. Reich was last to finish, losing 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 to Maggie Minton in a three hour battle.
Next, the Marlins will host Oberlin College on Wednesday, March 26, at 2 p.m.
