The Virginia Wesleyan baseball team (4-6, 0-4 ODAC) lost to the Hornets of Shenandoah University in an ODAC contest, losing 13-3.
Edgar Harwood led the Marlins going 1-for-4 at bat with one run and one RBI; and
Nick Valentin went 3-for-3 at bat with one RBI.
Sean Keener started for the Marlins and pitched 4.0 innings, allowed seven hits, four earned runs, and tallied three strikeouts.
The Marlins had a successful start at the top of the first as
Noah Burton walked to first.
John Bastiaans and
Nick Valentin were both hit by a pitch, loading the bases for VWU.
Noah Burton scored off an error by the Hornet pitcher to put VWU on the board 1-0. Shenandoah also had a strong start in the first inning with two runs to lead VWU 2-1.
Edgar Harwood homered in the top of the second to tie the game at 2-2; and the Marlin outfield handled the Hornets at the bottom of the inning to keep the score level.
John Bastiaans doubled to right center; and
Nick Valentin followed up with another double that scored
John Bastiaans based on the "ground rule double" to put the Marlins ahead 3-2 in the top of the third. Shenandoah responded with another run to tie the game at 3-3.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Marlins earned opportunities to score as
Noah Burton singled up the middle.
John Bastiaans walked, and then
Nick Valentin singled to the pitcher, which filled all the bases. Unfortunately, the Marlins were unable to capitalize, leaving three left on base at the end of the inning with no runs while Shenandoah homered to take a 4-3 lead at the bottom of the fifth.
The Hornets dominated the remaining three innings with three runs in the sixth, five runs in the seventh, and one run in the eighth; and they kept the Marlins from scoring to claim the 13-3 win.
Next, the Marlins are set to host Oswego State on Sunday, March 16 at 1 p.m.
